Shoot 4 - Work Diary

In this shoot I carried on with exploring the candid style which experimented with in the previous shoot, but the slight difference is that here I went to an urban location where there would be more people. Here I travelled to Brighton by car and took photographs during the journey. I chose to go to Brighton as its a tourist attraction and therefore would attract people from around the world with various cultures. During this time I also included some street and surroundings photography as well as photographing the pier and other attractions. In this shoot I used two lenses for different purposes. I used a 25-50mm lens to photograph scenery and streets whereas I used a 55-200mm lens to photograph people in order to get significant depth of field. Also when editing I tried a new approach to the colours, I increased the contrast and lowered the saturation because when increasing the contrast, the image automatically becomes more saturated.

This is one of my favourite photographs from the shoot whilst using the candid style of photography which captures the subject in the moment, forming very natural outcomes and poses. I feel that the subject is very photogenic for several reasons. I really like her tattoos and piercings which provide an insight to her style and also movements/cultures such as goth or punk. Also I feel that this also contrasts with her femininity as tattoos and piercings are stereotypically masculine which opposes her beauty in her face structure and figure. I feel that photographing people in restaurants and cafes work very effectively due to the reflections and flares created in the mirrors and also by being in these places, there is a sense of resting and refuelling for a journey which i find interesting. There is great depth of field in this picture as I used the lens with the largest focal length which allows her to stand out very effectively. I decided to create a specifically dark and gloomy colour scheme to match her gothic style but enhanced her femininity by sharpening and enlightening areas and making them warmer.

I feel that this piece is also very successful as it fulfils one of my main goals of the shoot which was to capture a sense of culture and religion. This is achieved through the ethnicity of the subjects and through the recognition of their clothing and also actions whilst taking the photograph. A calmness is formed through the act of praying and being at one with nature and I believe that is looks beautiful. I framed the subjects in the centre of the composition in order for them to be the focal point and therefore stand out. The patterns on the headwater and clothing imply an african culture which was furthered by them praying and the rituals that were undertaken. I also decided to make the photo look particularly cold by enhancing the blues through using the selective colour. By doing this I felt like it went well with the theme of sea and water. I shifted the neutrals and shadows to be colder by adding blues and cyans. Blue is also a very calming peaceful colour which works successfully with the peaceful action of praying.

This photograph is slightly different to the previous as people are not the subject of the photo. Here I tried photographing buildings and architecture of places which I saw during travelling which I feel has the potential to explore further in future shoots. Here I photographed the Royal Pavillion which is a former royal residence, consisting of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture. The formal elements of line, shape and pattern are very dominant in this piece through the type of architecture. The lines are seen in the pillars and lines which also come together to form patterns. There are also organised patterns where shapes are positioned in an order in reoccurrence. The patterns provide a sense of culture and the place looks of indian origin showing similarities to the Taj Mahal. This is the prime example of using more contrast and less saturation.

Progression:
In my next shoot I would like to go to a location such as London and focus of photographing people in the candid style as well as street photography. Also I would like to try Dryden Goodwin's style of photographing people on transport.
