In this shoot I practised a new approach and style to photography which was to take photographs of strangers without them knowing. This allowed me to catch them showing natural emotion and illustrate the journey that they are on. Here I went to Epping, high beach, hoping to find families and couples on day trips out. In order to allow me to photograph people without noticing me I used a 50-200mm lens which gave me the ability to take photographs from a further distance. This also produced great depth of field as the backgrounds were very blurred with the subject in focus, allowing them to stand out and be the focal point of the piece. Due to being in a desolate area, I didn't come across a lot of people but this shoot was very successful as I was able to try this type of candid photography which I would like to carry on in further shoots. I would travel to tourist attractions and more busy urban areas in order to relate my work to my photographers more effectively, Venturing more into street photography. I feel that this technique is worth pursuing due to its natural outcomes and sense of intimacy with the subjects, feeling like you're being let into their world, getting closer to them without actually knowing them.
This photograph is a mid shot from a side on angle of a woman who was on a trip with her partner and dog. As I took this photograph she began talking to her partner which I felt works very effectively as her actions are normal and natural which is ideal for what I want to photograph. I like the sense of mystery created through the fact that the subjects identity is slightly hidden through the fact that she is wearing glasses. I tried to create a particularly dark earthy colour scheme through using he selective colour tool where I darkened and muted some of the greens, specifically in the woman's coat and also exaggerated the orange and Browns in the background. This natural colour scheme compliments the natural style of taking the photograph which captures the subject in her natural state. The woman's face is the brightest part of the composition as the rest is dark and gloomy, this allows her face to be the focal point as intended. I like the texture in the hood of her coat which also contributes to the overall natural feel as it seems to be animal fur.
In this photograph I showed the woman with her partner and dog. Due to the poses that they're in it is recognisable that they are walking and therefore are showing evidence of a journey as they are travelling for leisure and peace. I feel that the way that I took the photograph from behind works very effectively and also shows influence from some of my researched artists as it seems to be a technique used in a lot of photography. I focussed on the subjects very effectively as the foreground is blurred whereas they are in focus. It almost seems as if I am peering through the trees. Once again i created a natural colour scheme by making the subjects' clothes muted and more similar to the surroundings. I feel that maybe in order to improve this piece I could've take it for, a slightly different angle to avoid the tree in the centre of the composition and also allow the dog to be more visible.
Progression:
In my next shoot I would like to go on a journey myself to a more urban tourist attraction such as Brighton and continue with this style of candid photography. I also would photograph buildings and streets and venture into street photography. My intentions are to show myself going on a journey as well as illustrating other people on their journey as well
