Discussion

Out of all the starting points The Journey, Dramatic Images, Water, People and Possessions, Mixed Media, Performing Arts, Patterns and Issues and Observations I originally found The Journey, water and patterns most interesting. This is because I felt that these were most practical and also provide me with a pathway for best exploration and development. I then further decided to focus on The journey as the other starting points can be included within it. Also I felt that water was a particularly narrow topic which for me, would lead very far. This was the similar when thinking about pattern but also I feel that there is not a lot of room for intellectual content or meanings/messages within these topics. This opposes the opportunity for great exploration and content with the topic of The Journey as it is very broad.

My first reaction and idea on how to explore the topic was in depicting the literal sense of a journey in terms of photography transport such as cars, buses, trains and also by foot and also station where the transport pass through or are stored. A main theme that I felt that could be explored would be movement which is often associated with a journey, being a key indicator of travel. This could be clearly shown through transport being mobile, photographer the subjects during a period of movement. A camera technique that would work effectively with this prospect is the use of long exposures and blurring which would contribute to the overall purpose and meaning, being extremely relevant. This could work effectively at night where light streaks and beams from the vehicles are formed and have a very effective aesthetic.

I also felt that another possible avenue to explore would be to photograph people being on the journey themselves such as being in their own vehicles/public transport. I could also experiment with researching stereotypical routines, actions and tendencies that occur on a journey such as periods for resting and also show evidence of a journey such as tracks. Also it could be worth investigating people's purpose for their journeys which could range from standard commuting to much deeper meanings such a for a better standard of living. This can relate to culture and where they are stereotypically located and I would like to photograph typical object which are taken on a journey dependent on its motivation.

One of the main methods which I intend to use is Street Photography where I will take photographs whilst on a journey myself, capturing moments as they come, creating very natural outcomes. I would travel to busy areas such a city centres photographing random people but still making connections with them. This urban approach to photograhy would relate to many of my researched photographers in my research log. I could also explore the sense of a personal journey which people experience, perhaps growing up, time passing and maturing or growing as a person.
