The theme of a journey features very heavily in this photograph through a couple of aspects and factors. Firstly, it is clear that the subject is on a train which is a mode of transport and is further conveyed through the separate train track seen to the left of the composition. Also due to the visible ethnicity and race as well as the aesthetics of the surroundings, an overall identity can be created in relation to the location of where the photo is taken. It could be considered that this is perhaps taken in the African region where the young black child is surrounded by stereotypical poor standard of living as well as poverty and insufficient opportunities. Therefore the fact that the boy is on the train looking out of the window can suggest that he is travelling elsewhere to escape the place he is located. The fact that he is looking out the window can be interpreted in the way that his is looking forwards towards his future and next destination.
This photograph is also very interesting in the way in which is depicts a journey. Here the journey is implied through the recognition of a window which shows the reflection of the surroundings. This shows us the landscape and countryside where it is renowned for trains to pass through, therefore implying a sense of movement . It is also recognised that the subject is sleeping which is a usual action whilst on a journey. Here the journey is a form to get to one destination to the next, meanwhile resting throughout.
This photograph has used the technique of double exposure in order to demonstrate a sense of a journey. There is a faint outline included in the foreground of the composition and a much smaller darker and sharper image in the centre of the composition but is in the background. The therefore shows the progression of the subject with the movement and journey they have taken. It also implies a sense of time passing by, the faint image shows the past where the subject originally was and the background image can imply the past/future with the subject in the new location. The fact that subject is walking along the train tracks also imply a journey in itself. The whole of the composition is blurred which contrasts with the sharpness of the image in the centre of the frame, this acts as a focal point and creates further emphasis on this image.
In the last photograph, there is a dominant theme of a journey. Here it comes in the form of an expedition which is a journey undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, research, or war. In this case the clear motivation and purpose is war through the recognition of soldiers on the ground. It also relates to an expedition due to the fact that there is a group of people travelling together with the same purpose. They are all fighting for their county and going on a journey for the benefit of their nation. This photograph has been taken in Vietnam during the 70's. Also due to the fact that their are helicopters in the air a new element of a journey. They have travelled to transfer the soldiers to their location. The slight blur on the propellers also imply movement.
