Connecting Essay

In this photograph a female is placed in the centre of the frame, maybe a style of candid photography, in front of a neon sign. The sign produces colours of red, pink, purple and blue which produces a very feminine colour scheme, relating well to the subject. The woman is placed in a relatively high position which can perhaps be used to make her seem superior. She is looking away from the camera which could imply a sense of shyness which can be furthered through her attempt to hide her identity by putting her hood up. There are a lot of shadows included in the composition which are created by her positioning in front of the sign which enhances the outline of her body. Her face is considerably dark in comparison the rest of the composition. I like the sense of texture of fur on the collar of her clothing which provides a softness and ease to the photograph.

This is my photograph which I took at night at Picadilly Circus through using a candid style of photography. As I photographed at night I was able to create a very dark piece which was enlightened through the presence of light coming from billboards and neon signs. Here the light is projected onto the right side of the subjects face, illuminating colours of red and pink which vaguely highlights his shape and structure. This area stands out significantly due to the rest of the composition being very dark and gloomy which implies a feeling of mystery and even sinister connotations through the lack of emotion in the subjects face which goes hand in hand with the conniptions of darkness and black.

These two photographs can be connected through the same style of photography being used as well as them both being taken at night. The darkness and shadows imply mystery and hidden identity in both cases whilst colourful neon lighting has been projected onto them in order to show the shape and structure of their figures. My image has sinister conniptions whereas the other image implies vulnerability through the relation of danger with darkness. Both subjects are placed in the centres of the composition and facing towards the right side of the frame. The contrast between light and shadow works very well in showing the form of the subjects in both cases. A slight difference would be the brightness and exposure of the images as mine is much darker than the other and the model is less visible than in the other photograph.
